Luke Howarth MP Secures $1.2 Million for North Lakes Sporting Clubs

Federal Member for Petrie Luke Howarth MP has today announced more than $1.2 million Australian Government funding for better sporting infrastructure in North Lakes.

The funding will be put towards courts and a club house for the North Lakes Blues Netball Club ($1 million) and a lighting upgrade at the North Lakes Eels AFL Football Club ($263,000).

Luke Howarth MP began conversations with both clubs around a year ago and has since been researching Australia Government funding avenues, as well as speaking directly with the Prime Minister and Treasurer.

More than 600 locals had added their names to petitions for the funding, which Luke Howarth MP took to Canberra during Budget week.

“I have been speaking with members of local clubs like the North Lakes Blues and the Eels AFL Club for a while now, and it’s clear that we need to build and upgrade local sporting facilities,” said Luke Howarth MP.

“The population around North Lakes has more than doubled in the past few years, and it’s no wonder – this is a beautiful place to live.

“But the only way we’ll keep our community going strong is by improving public facilities and increasing opportunities as the region evolves.

“Sporting infrastructure in particular is important because to be part of a team, to keep fit and healthy has such a positive impact on people, whether we’re talking about kids or adults. Sport brings people together.”

The funding comes amid Luke Howarth MP’s campaign to save the North Lakes Golf Course, which is in danger of re-development.

“We can’t afford to lose any more local sporting facilities and it’s unacceptable that the Council and State Government are not on side, helping save this facility,” said Luke Howarth MP.
