Safer Communities Fund (closed)

The Safer Communities Fund has been extended for a sixth round, with funding being made available for Early Intervention grants and Infrastructure grants.

Round six provides up to $30 million across two types of grant opportunities:

  • Up to $20 million is available for Early Intervention grants of between $200,000 and $1.5 million.
  • Up to $10 million is available for Infrastructure grants of between $10,000 and $500,000.

Applications for Early Intervention grants will open on 28 May 2021 and close on 22 July 2021.

Applications for Infrastructure grants will open on 15 June 2021 and close on 5 August 2021.

The Safer Communities Fund supports the Australian Government’s commitment to deliver safer communities through crime prevention initiatives.

Part of that commitment is ensuring that youth have somewhere to go to seek the support and assistance they need to build positive relationships and skills, through the Early Intervention funding stream.

Security infrastructure projects delivered through the Infrastructure funding stream not only improve security and protect local communities, but will also keep people employed and boost the economy.

The Safer Communities Fund is a long-standing program that has invested more than $215 million since 2016 and provided over 600 grants directly to local communities.

Early Intervention grants

Early Intervention grants are available to organisations that engage in early intervention activities with at risk young people to prevent them from engaging in criminal activity or anti-social behaviour.

Eligible activities include:

  • services to youths who are, or are at high risk of, becoming involved with the criminal justice system
  • programs that increase the levels of engagement that youth at high risk have with their local communities, by building resilience, cultural connections and job readiness skills.

Applications will be assessed on a competitive basis in accordance with the eligibility and merit criteria in the Grant Opportunity Guidelines – Safer Communities Fund Round Six: Early Intervention.

Further information about early intervention grants, including how to apply and eligibility criteria, is available once the grant opportunity opens at https://www.business.gov.au/SCF-Early-Intervention.

Infrastructure grants

Infrastructure grants are available to community organisations, places of worship, schools and pre-schools, and local councils to help implement and boost crime prevention and security initiatives such as CCTV, lighting and bollards.

The grant opportunity aims to ensure these organisations are able to reduce the risk of crime, violence, and anti-social behaviour driven by racial and/or religious intolerance by funding crime prevention initiatives.

Applications will be assessed on a competitive basis in accordance with the eligibility and merit criteria in the Grant Opportunity Guidelines – Safer Communities Fund Round Six: Infrastructure grants.

Further information about infrastructure grants, including how to apply and eligibility criteria, is available once the program opens at https://www.business.gov.au/SCF-Early-Intervention.
