REMEMBRANCE DAY MAIL OUT TO PETRIE SCHOOLS

Schools will receive an educational kit encouraging students to learn more about Remembrance Day in the lead up to 11 November, when veterans will be commemorated for their service and sacrifice in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

Luke Howarth, Federal Member for Petrie said the kits are produced each year by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) and sent out to schools to help students understand Remembrance Day and why it is such an important day on the Australian calendar.

“Remembrance Day is a reminder to all Australians to stop and reflect on the service and sacrifice of all the men and women who have served and given their lives in all wars, conflicts and peace keeping missions.

“Each year at 11am on 11 November, we observe one minute’s silence out of respect for these men and women.

“The Remembrance Day mail out is way for school children to learn more about what Remembrance Day is and why we stop to remember our veterans,” said Mr Howarth.

“It is also useful in teaching our local students more about Australia’s wartime history and the role our nation has played, and continues to play, in different conflicts and peacekeeping operations.”

The 2019 mail out is distributed to more than 17,600 recipients across Australia and overseas and includes a Remembrance Day poster, the 2020 DVA calendar and educational resources.

This year’s Remembrance Day poster features the Ode of Remembrance and words taken from Laurence Binyon’s poem, ‘For the Fallen’.
