PETRIE 2023 VOLUNTEER AWARDS MORNING TEA

Friday, 19 May 2023

Last week, the Federal Member for Petrie, the Hon. Luke Howarth celebrated the contributions of volunteers in the local community who go above and beyond in remarkable ways at Petrie’s 2023 Volunteer Awards Morning Tea. This annual event is an opportunity to highlight the unsung, and often unseen heroes of society and was appropriately held alongside National Volunteer Week.

The 2021 Census reported over 18,000 people in Petrie that participated in unpaid voluntary work. Across Australia, it is estimated that nearly 6 million people volunteer through an organisation annually. This is almost one third of people aged 15 years and over. The economic and social contribution of volunteering is estimated to be $290 billion annually.

Special guest for the morning was Mara Basanovic, the CEO of Volunteering Queensland, who gave an uplifting and inspiring speech about the invaluable service the volunteering community provides to local organisations, Queensland and Australia wide.

Luke Howarth said, “The 26 nominees were put forward for awards by their organisation or fellow volunteers and it was great to hear about the amazing work they have been doing the community.”

“In my almost 10 years as the Federal Member for Petrie, I have met a lot of volunteers, across many different organisations that have inspired me and shown me what service over self looks like. I’d like to offer my sincerest thank you to the outstanding volunteers that were recognised at the morning tea and the many other in our community. You have impacted countless lives and you truly make this world a better place.”
