Shadow Minister for Defence Industry and Shadow Minister for Defence Personnel
Luke Howarth MP
Luke Howarth MP served as the Shadow Minister for Defence Industry and Shadow Minister for Defence Personnel from June 2022 to March 2024, bringing a personal connection and deep understanding of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) to his role. With his son William serving in the ADF, having graduated from the Australian Defence Force Academy and currently undergoing officer training at the Royal Military College, Duntroon, Luke’s insights into the challenges faced by defence personnel are both personal and professional.
During his time in this portfolio, Luke was a strong advocate for Australiaâs defence industry, pushing for policies that ensured local manufacturing capabilities and supported the ADFâs operational readiness. His leadership focused on fostering innovation within the defence sector, strengthening Australiaâs national security, and ensuring that the men and women serving in uniform received the best support possible, both on and off the field.
Luke’s commitment to the welfare of defence personnel extended to championing mental health initiatives and family support services, recognising the unique challenges faced by those serving the nation. His hands-on approach and personal connection to the defence community made him a passionate and influential voice for the ADF during his tenure.
